The Inspiration
Understanding how special this sacred place is and disregarding all hardship, Khyabje Thrangu Rinpoche worked long and hard to establish the monastery. At first, the conditions were very basic as there were no roads or water. Not shying away from difficulties, Thrangu Rinpoche considered the teachings of the Buddha and in particular those of the Kagyu tradition. He set as a goal the establishment of three sections in the monastery: a monastic college focused on the study of Buddhist philosophy, a practice assembly focused on meditation, and an activity contingent focused on various aspects of work at the monastery. One purpose was to serve the entire world in pacifying all misfortune, such as sickness, famine, fighting, and quarrels. Another was to bring people onto the path of peace and nonviolence so that they might attain the temporary benefit of a rebirth in the higher realms and the ultimate benefit of definitive liberation. This quotation illustrates how such a deep aspiration to benefit others manifests:
Noble individuals do not announce what they plan to do.
Since they do not make a promise easily,
As if it were inscribed in stone,
Their promise will not change even if they pass away.
When Thrangu Rinpoche was starting these three sections of Dharma activity at the monastery, since there was no motorable road, he had to walk the twelve kilometers from Dhulikhel many times. Also in those days, he had no personal quarters and electricity had not yet arrived. From all points of view, the conditions were very simple, and he had to make tremendous efforts. Without a doubt, the saying is true:
“The Buddha does not tire of benefiting living beings.”
